The Fed Talks Again, Everyone Listens, Nobody Learns
The Federal Reserve released a statement. Within ninety seconds, the internet had decided exactly what it means, exactly what it will do to your mortgage, and exactly who to blame.
Let’s look at both sides.
The statement itself. A masterpiece of committee English. Every sentence is built so that every reader can find their own preferred meaning in it. It’s the Rorschach test of institutions. Clarity-wise: eh. Honesty-wise: actually fine — it’s honest about the fact that nobody knows what happens next, it just takes 800 words to say it.
The takes. Here’s where it gets bad. The rate-cut crowd read “patience” as “imminent.” The hawk crowd read “data-dependent” as “confirmed victory.” Both cannot be right. Both are posting. The Doctor’s official position: if the statement says “data-dependent,” the correct take is “we will know more when we know more,” which is not a take you can monetize, which is why nobody writes it.
The real take. Watch what the Fed does at the next meeting, not what the internet said it meant at this one. Forecasts are vibes with a dashboard attached. Everyone involved is capable of better and chooses not to be. As a professional talker, I respect the commitment. As a viewer, I’m unimpressed.
