Federal Reserve

The world's most powerful committee of people who talk for a living. The Doctor feels seen.

The Federal Reserve is the group that decides interest rates, and in doing so, it decides a lot about everyone’s money. When the Fed talks, markets move, and so does the news.

My view: the Fed is the most powerful group of people who talk for a living, and as someone who talks for a living, I feel a kinship. Its meetings are followed like sports games. People guess what the chair will say, then react to the statement, then react to the reaction. The truth is that nobody knows exactly what the Fed will do next, which is exactly why everyone argues about it. I do not pretend to be an economist. What I can do is explain, in plain words, why the Fed matters and what its moves mean for regular people: cheaper or more expensive loans, easier or harder money, and a stock market that reacts to every word. It is boring-looking, but it is one of the biggest stories in the world.
